|EDIT: Now available on the site our review!|
A little surprise ITEAD presents the third generation of its most successful home automation actuator - with little imagination (but in continuity) called Sonoff Basic R3 - which will replace previous versions. Being substantially of the same device (but also equipped with 433mhz radio support), the context is also presented Sonoff Basic RFR3.
The first, most obvious novelty lies in the appearance of the actuator: more sinuous shapes, more pleasing to the eye. The thing that leaves us rather perplexed is the redimensioningnament of the unit: while R1 and R2 measured 88x28x33mm, this new model measures 91x43x25mm, so slightly more than the two previous models.
Last but not least (indeed), with this new model ITEAD embraces (finally!) logic DIY, or a philosophy for which the firmware on board the device will expose to the network on which it will be certified (ours Wi-Fi) of the REST standard API, which translated in a practical sense means that the various personal HUBthat we know will be able to implement platforms, addon, plugin for the ITEAD ecosystem, without obliging us to reprofirmware weight with alternative firmware (Tasmota, ESPUrna etc.) to "open" the devices to full integration with our personal home automation. Full details on the REST API specifications are available here.
It is not yet known if this model will in any case guarantee the great degrees of freedom offered by alternative firmware such as Tasmota e Espurna (and others); having said that, this opening by ITEAD is and remains extremely positive, a sign that the proAsian producer has gathered and translated the needs of the market into facts. Everything suggests that other devices too of the family "Sonoff Smart Home”, will be updated in this sense during the course of the year.
For the rest the R3 is broadly the same actuator of the previous versions, the R1 and the R2: maximum load 10A (2200W), single channel, compatibility with IFTTT, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and architecture (supposedly) yet based on ESP8266 - which should still guarantee us the possibility of reproconfigure the firmware. It is not given to know which is the scheme of the board, therefore how much, eventually, it is easy to carry out the change to clean contact. As mentioned, in the RF version the actuator is also equipped with 433mhz radio support.
We just have to wait May, month in which the actuator will be available on the market.
Obviously we will monitor for you the news to come especially in the sense DIY, to understand to what extent these innovations will facilitate the integration of this new device (and those to come) with ours HUB personal.
More info on this release are on the ITEAD website.
