The unit looks like most Aqara sensors like a square of 3 centimeters to the side, powered by a button battery, which can be placed where it is best believed based on the use to be made of it using the double-sided adhesive tape on the back.
But what is it for, exactly? The sensor, as the name suggests, detects - through three-axis accelerometers - the vibrations to which it is subjected. To be interesting, however, is the very concept of "vibration" associated with this context.
Like all components ZigBee, this sensor also needs to be configured and used gateway; basic, have thisnameis done via the proman app Aqara Home (For Android e iOS) in case the component is connected to gateway of the line Aqara Smart Home Automation or through theapp We Home (For Android e iOS) where it is connected to gateway of the line Xiaomi Mi Smart Home, to which is comproproperly compatible. Obviously, in the absence of such gateway the solution (among the most jokes) may be to adopt a BRIDGE/Gateway compatible with a personal HUBsoftware, or directly a personal hardware HUB.
Once connected to the gateway through theapp, the sensor can be calibrated in terms of sensibility (three levels: low, medium and high) and is thus able not only information on vibration magnitude (in the form of a graph) but also three different "calculated" measurements (free fall, vibration, inclination) that can be used in the automations (scenes) of the ecosystem in use.
How to use it
The official features are those listed above, but there are others hidden which we will see later. Meanwhile, the use, "limited" to the "basic" functions (...) is already among the most disparate.
Meanwhile, the most traditional use is trivially that appsilicate with doors and finestre. By setting a maximum sensitivity it is possible to be alerted when hypothetical attempts at break-in are detected, since only contact with the passage would cause detection.
The idea of placing it on the inside of the door is also interesting of a safe; the "free fall" / "inclination" function could instead be used instead on overhead garage doors and / or traditional doors, to detect different states. As often happens in the personal home automation suit, the limit is imagination.
And the hidden function?

As often happens with the Aqara components, the construction materials have impressed us for quality and compactness. Use is obviously limited at the range of radio transmission between sensor and Gateway that in the field ZigBee, the air line is certified for at least 100 meters (without obstacles and in the absence of signal repeaters).
Talk about the grade compatibility of a single component ZigBee it makes little sense. In fact, these components cannot be used alone but only coupled with an element BRIDGE/Gateway Zigbee↔︎TCP/IP, therefore its compatibility derives directly from the degree of compatibility of this "collector" element to which it is associated.
We have a way to test cars with success this associated sensor:
- al gateway of the Aqara Smart family Home Automation;
- al gateway Family Xiaomi Mi Smart Home (Mijia);
- a deCONZ with ConBee and / or RaspBee;
- a zigbee2mqtt with CC2531;
- ad Homey.
Use of the sensor associated with gateway Xiaomi and Aqara provides partial compatibility with Google Assistant e Amazon Alexa, while the service is not supported IFTTT. As we will see below, these limits can be circumvented in some cases by the degree of integrability of these gateway. Furthermore, while the gateway Aqara it is natively compatible with Appthe HomeKits, gateway Xiaomi is not.
Owners of Homey can directly use the sensor without needing gateway (it is Homey itself), therefore since Homey is compatible with Google Assistant e Amazon Alexa (as well as IFTTT), it also becomes the sensor.
The degree of home automation integrability, as for compatibility, it goes through the gateway to which the sensor is connected.
Il gateway Xiaomi it can be integrated with practically all realities HUB best known software:
- Home Assistant (see integration guide);
- Homebridge (to render the gateway and therefore the accessories connected to it compatible Appthe HomeKits);
Given that as noted the integration of the gateway Xiaomi (and therefore of the components associated with them) with Home Assistant it works quite well, this sensor is certainly among those easily integrated with our beloved HUB personnel. However, we note an interesting undocumented feature: the integration of this sensor generates two entity presso Home Assistant very particular: "bed activity" and "coordination"
The first entity seems to provide an analysis, basically, of sleep. We placed the sensor under the mattress, in the middle of a double bed, setting the sensitivity to "medium" to detect a trend of this type:
This sensor entity is more useful both for the tenant's sleep detection (you see projet), both to detect activity of a newborn or an elder.
The second entity instead it provides the spatial position of the sensor through a triplet of values that communicate to the home automation the position of the X, Y and Z axes. Utility? Well, as always we need to think about the procontext, but an example could still be to place the sensor on a door cat flap and, with appropriate definitions within the configuration of the "HUB, monitor entry and exit of the house cat, perhaps taking a picture as it does Pepito's master.
As compatible natively with Appthe HomeKits, il gateway Aqara instead it cannot be integrated with HUB personal software. In practice using a gateway Aqara it is not possible to integrate the accessories connected to it profirst personal home automation.
If instead to integrate the actuator to the proprio personale HUB do not want to use a gateway Xiaomi / Aqara can be used alternatively elements like the BRIDGE/Gateway software deCONZ combined with antennas ConBee and / or RaspBee (the first with any computer the second specifically with Raspberry Pi).
Homey, as mentioned, contains an antenna in itself ZigBee, therefore it is able to autonomously integrate the sensor without the need for other components.

Beyond the use as a system burglary, we were particularly struck by the idea of use with children, elderly and infirm thanks to the results of integration with Home Assistant explained above. To those who asked us if there were solutions to monitor the state of wakefulness / movement of an elder, here is the answer.
Beyond this, like all also the Aqara / Xiaomi sensors it's a good one prolearned. It costs as always little, it is built well as always, it is aesthetically pleasing, it integrates with our personal home automation, the battery is durable and the format ZigBee guarantees great reliability.
