Basic "Nest Learning Thermostat"Is a chronothermostat, but it is a disrespectful comparison: it would be like saying that the smartphone and the telephone booth are the same thing. Although the purpose (that of planning the heating of an environment) is the same, what differentiates a normal thermostat / chrono-thermostat from a home automation are in fact the modes, the achievable energy savings over time, the analysis of the behavior of the tenants ( their heating needs, their actual presence), the external climate and the energy characteristics of the house. Something much more advanced of the simple "turn on the heating from 17 to 23 keeping the temperature at 20 degrees"
"Nests Learning Thermostat ” si proplaces on the fierce market of smart thermostats profirst in this key. We tested it approfirmly for you and these are our considerations.
The thermostat comes in one simple and eco-friendly cardboard packaging. The components it contains are responses with rational elegance, as well as being well proboobs from bumps and any accidental damage. The first to present itself to the eyes is the true control unit e proman, the thermostat, or a cylinder in brushed steel and glass capable of transmitting an excellent sensation of strength immediately.
Then the other elements of the kit emerge: a circular mounting base for the main unit, a white plastic unit called “Heat Link“, A small power supply with its USB / micro-USB cable (2 mt.). Finally, the manuals dedicated to the end user to the installer.
Appearance and build quality
As anticipated, what immediately strikes the main unit is the quality perceivable even on an epidermal level: it is a cylindrical component (3,2 cm of probottom and 8,4 in diameter) compact, with moderate weight, which has inside the circumference an interactive LCD screen (once mounted on the wall or on an optional table bracket it is operated by touching it and exerting a minimum pressure) and, outside, a steel ring that rotates on the axis rappresent from the screen itself. This rotation - we will see it better later - rappresists the interface with the features proplaced on the screen.
The ring is available - in addition to the "classic" in brushed steel - in different materials and colors: copper, black and white.
The screen is particularly robust, especially with regard to scratch resistance: according to the specifications, the glass of which it is made contains silicone, carbon and titanium, which would make it appparticularly resistant. Moreover it is water and oil repellent, which does not hurt: the screen of a unit so beautiful on an aesthetic / functional level but covered with signs and fingerprints would not be a pretty sight. We confirm this low tendency in retaining the impronte: after much use the unit remains fairly clean, and that minimum remaining physiological trace is swept away with a simple wipe of cloth.
The supplied power supply (useful but not strictly necessary, as we will see) appthey are too of good build quality, and comes combined with a USB / micro-USB cable about two meters long. The unit "Heat Link" is instead a parallelepiped with a square base (2,8 cm of probottom, side 11) in white plastic which presents a single large circular button in the center and nothing more (this key, if pressed, allows you to pass with a single gesture from the proautomatic programming to the manual, and vice versa).
The first thing to do - unless there is an installer a prosee on your behalf - understand which of the many methods offered by the kit to install the thermostat. The "Learning Thermostat" of Nest in fact it is applicable in many different contexts: combined traditional boilers, storage, OpenTherm etc.
The actuator which, for theapptogether, prosee youON / OFF (controlled in turn by the thermostat unit and its intelligence) of the systems of proheat production is unity Heat Link:
which, powered by AC mains voltage 230v, can he:
- control a combined 230v boiler;
- control a combined low voltage boiler with clean contact;
- control an OpenTherm boiler;
- control the control solenoid valve for systems with district heating;

The assembling the thermostat unit can be carried out:
- in prothe "Heat Link" unit, which can prosee (by direct current output 12v) to power it;
- away from the unit, powered by the USB power adapter (supplied).
Thermostat unit and Heat Link unit communicate independently by radio, connection that is established during the first configuration phase.
The assembly of the two units in different points of the house can be motivated by various reasons related to the reality of the environment and the plant: given that the main unit, the thermostat, is also the dedicated one to the measurement of the ambient temperature, you can choose to place it at an optimal point in the home, which can often be very different from where the heads of the boiler activation cables are located.
The thermostat unit can be mounted Wall (support supplied) or table-top, thanks to a bracket (optional, available for purchase at a cost of around 20 euro) which allows it to be positioned where it is best believed without having to fix it to the wall.
Unlike of other smart thermostats, in fact the "Nest Learning Thermostat ”can be turned on and configured in its entirety simply by using the interface of the thermostat itself and not necessarily through the proman app ("Nest”, Available for Android e iOS).
The use ofapp it is however suggested (not to mention supported): it allows not only to configure the unit (or le unity, as we will see later, but also to improve the user experience, such as providing intelligence to carsappreturn an element more to assess the presence of tenants in the environment (via the geolocated gps location of the phone (s) on which it is installed) and much more.
The use ofapp provides cloud registration Nest to which - always through theapp - the thermostat is associated; subsequently this cloud provides access (via the same credentials) to the portal “Home Nest"Which allows you to administer the thermostat (and all other components, if any) Nest in proown possession) also through a common browser.
Once the initial configuration is complete, it is possible to proceed two roads:
- manual planning;
obviously the two roads have different characteristics, which approwe base in the following paragraph.
Interesting the "Lock" function, which allows to "lock" the physical thermostat not allowing variations in configurations and target temperature and leaving these functions only in the hands of the administrator acting the system through app Nest. This is a particularly welcome feature for example for parents who do not want - for example - to allow children to make changes to the settings. In this mode, the thermostat works regularly and can be consulted but not changed in the settings.
"Nest Learning Thermostat ”, we say it immediately, he is as intelligent as his fame and his name suggest, but this intelligence does not emerge immediately, on the contrary. The effect, especially the first few days of use, is slightly estranging. Let's see why.
By setting the thermostat in manual mode, the behavior is simple to guess: the Nest behaves from classic chrono-thermostat, as beautiful as you want, but still a simple chrono-thermostat. The only difference from a traditional one lies in the capacity of the Nest to interpret (through theapp Nest installed on the smartphone of the tenants and through the detection of movement by the thermostat unit) the presence / absence of tenants, possibly activating the "ECO" mode (a lower target temperature, limit, set by the user - in our tests we have for example set it to 14) instead of proplanned weight.
Setting it instead in auto-modeappyield, everything changes.
Auto modeappreturn (which then gives the device its name - a sign that this function rappresenta for Nest the spearhead of the prodotto) is a method that involves intervention artificial intelligence present on the device (and on the cloud Nest) in order to make it understand the "habits" of the tenants, broadly from the point of view of:
- switch-on times and desired temperatures;
- presence / absence times;
- thermal efficiency of the environment and the system (heating / cooling speed, even compared to the external climate).
Although in the first few days the behavior of the thermostat may, as mentioned, seem to be bizarre, as the perception of his actual intelligence increases, to the point of forgetting, with time, of his presence, leaving him full and total autonomy in ignitions.
After a few days, in fact, it begins to appburn on the screen the note "green leaf", which indicates to the user that the heating is set up efficiently, in a tradeoff ideal between well-being and consumption.
Nest guarantees, through the use of its technology learning, an important energy saving, which should spend the purchase and installation of the prolearned in one or two cold seasons.
Another interesting function we have been able to test is the "True Radiant", Or the capacity of"Nest Learning Thermostat ”of appmake the degree of energy efficiency of the plant with respect to external weather conditions and the request to raise the temperature.
Simply put, the thermostat can understand what are the necessary heating times from an actual temperature to a target, therefore it is able to effectively turn on the system so that we can find a warm house at the right point when we wake up, rather than returning from an exit. THE'app Nest and the interface of the thermostat unit also allows the thermostat to be interrogated to consult the access history and the degree of efficiency implemented.
In order to refine the degree of appefficiency (and therefore optimal management) of the “Learning Thermostat”, particularly large rooms can introduce one or more additional temperature sensors, bluetooth, to be placed in the various rooms.
Finally, we tried - unfortunately without finding it - the "Open Window" functionality, which in others promarket products allows to suspend the proheat generation for a certain number of minutes if the opening of the finestre (deduced from the sharp drop in internal temperature). Being a software function, we hope that over time too Nest decide to introduce it on his proleading duct.
Experience of use
|We found the use of this intelligent device rather pleasant, especially by observing the behavior of people unaccustomed to technology: without knowing neither read nor write, the average user - where the intelligence of the thermostat itself does not already have pronoticeable to heat up enough - in case he wants to raise the temperature he simply has to rotate a metal ring clockwise and voila, the new target temperature is set.|
From the point of view of the most advanced users, the use of the LED display and the interface provided by the ring and the touch makes the experience pleasant, above all because - beyond the tactile hi-tech perception of what you are doing - this interface avoids the use ofapp, which can be boring.
It is, if anything, theappin fact, to disappoint us a little: meager and not immediately intuitive (not even for us), theapp Nest is clearly a step below the average level of all other aspects related to product. We have noticed, on the part of theapp, a slight delay in perceiving the actual presence / absence of tenants, which has caused an obvious unnecessary consumption of proheat production; it is also true that this symptom occurred only during the first days, or at the height of the "learning": Having overcome that, we have no longer detected this proBlema. Being aapp, we hope that Nest make an effort to make it more functional and improved in terms of usability.
Proin relation to this apparente proBlema we have anonymously asked for assistance Nest, which (we chose the live chat channel) proved to be competent and quick to accurately diagnose the proproblem, inviting us to wait a few days in order to allow theNest Learning Thermostat ”to understand our behaviors. Skeptical of the answer, we had to change our minds quickly enough.
We also like the thermostat's ability to understand when to turn on the profirst display: passing in front of him (within two or three meters) the display turns on by itself (with intensity) luminosa rappvegetable lumienvironment), displaying contents based on the chosen configuration. You can simply indicate lat current temperature, rather than that target or what apprezzabile, conditions and weather forecasts, or finally the format time digital or analog.
In terms of compatibility he "Nest Interface Learning Thermostat without proproblems with Google Home (Assistant) e Amazon Echo (Alexa), which allows you to query and set the thermostat via voice commands.
Compatibility with Appthe HomeKits was announced at the end of 2018: at the time of our test it was not yet available. "Nest Finally, Learning Thermostat is piousnamesupported at the service IFTTT.
|Nb CAUTION: the entire contents of this paragraph is no longer valid starting with the 31 August 2019. As previously announced, Google has acquired Nest thus changing the scenario: starting from the summer 2019, in fact, the programma “Works with Nest” ceases to exist and, with it, the possibility of developing software components that allow the integration of the components of this brand through the cloud APIs of the proconductor. Therefore the integration - first wide - it ceases to exist in its turn. THE products Nest therefore they can be checked - except Google's afterthoughts only through theapplished here Google Home.|
As for the degree of home automation integrability, Nest is among the (many, by now) products that can be easily integrated into the major ones HUB personal.
Our personal HUBfavorite with this device makes discreet sparks. Integration is possible (unlike the younger brother, the "Nest Thermostat E") Using an ad hoc platform daughter, of course, of the component "Climate".
This integration is easily accomplished: it is sufficient to register for free on the platform Nest dedicated to developers and in this environment define an endpoint to connect Home Assistant with the cloud Nest (to this we will dedicate an ad hoc guide prossimamente).
This done, the integration will deliver thirteen different types of entities of which the leader is, for theappanointed, an entity "Climate".

As can be easily seen, integration not only offers thermostat control but also various states, including temperature and humidity (useful as sensors in home automation) as well as the operating status of the thermostat, operating mode and more. The temperature accuracy is half a degree - as indeed on theapp Nest and on the thermostat itself.
The only flaw of this integration, the absence of an entity "Device Tracker"That, starting from the geolocation data of theapp Nest, provides the domotics with the presence / absence status of the tenants.
Finally, the possibility of exposing the entities of Home Assistant to HomeKit implicitly renders the Nest a compatible thermostat with the domotic standard Appthem.

Even the 'personale HUB capable of making compatible with Appthe HomeKits devices that natively would not, allow integration with "Nest Learning Thermostat ”: the approis the same as Home Assistant, which uses the development environment Nest to create a connection endpoint. An ad hoc plugin completes the work; Unlike Home Assistant, however, only the thermostat unit can be integrated and not the accessory functions (thermometer, hygrometer etc.).
