Z-Wave AT THE TOP
The technology Z-Wave, as is known, is among the most apprezzed in the field of personal home automation. The reasons are many: big availability of components, great ease of use, exceeding the limits related to the size of the environment (typical when, for example, technologies are used as valid in any case ZigBee or, worse still, bluetooth) thanks to the adoption of philosophy mesh, which provides that each element (powered not by battery) of the network acts as a micro-repeater, thus generating networks capable of covering stable integers without the need for a particular technical preparation (something that is necessary, for example, by configuring mesh networks Wi-Fi).
To have a network Z-Wave (or trivially, to control even a single component based on it) it is necessary to have at least one single element “controller node"Such as to generate a network of this type to which, appconnect subsequent nodes (be they controllers or slaves).
Among the most popular market choices, Aeotec presents a very wide range of compatible components in the catalog Z-Wave at the head of which there is a pivotal element, the Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5, an dongle USB useful to equip the propri systems of an act controller node, appunto the definition of a profirst network Z-Wave. In practice, connecting this component via USB to a computer equipped with standard control software Z-Wave (to follow we clarify this concept) it is possible to feed it and equip the environment with a network Z-Wave and, of course, administer it via software. Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5 is in practice the antagonist of BRIDGE/Gateway How ConBee, the latter however dedicated to connections ZigBee.
Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5 appare like a typical one USB pendrive, although the dimensions (88mm x 28mm) are slightly larger than a typical key for external storage use. In matt white plastic (perhaps ABS), on the back it presents a shaped button which hides a multi-colored LED; this button is used to set the key in learning mode if this is not possible procedura - useful for giving access to further nodes to the network Z-Wave - via software. An additional button on the back (reachable with a needle) allows the reset of the device.
La Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5 it is powered by USB, but it has an internal 100 mAh battery capable of keeping it powered up to 15 consecutive days.
The operating range is evaluated by proconductor over the 150 meters in free field, value in the strings of a typical BRIDGE/Gateway Z-Wave. We can confirm that we have detected the network signal Z-Wave issued by this dongle at a distance of two floors of stairs (and relative reinforced concrete floors) with an attenuation not excessive, however usable.
Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5 backwards compatible with all current standards Z-Wave, including the most recent Z-Wave More, which guarantees up to 250% bandwidth and the 67% coverage in addition, greater encryption and security than the first standard.
Finally, the dongle Z-Wave di Aeotec allow the highernamento OTA (Over-the-air) firmware profirst and the nodes connected to it.
As suggested above, Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5 is useful to equip the proenvironment of a network Z-Wave. The administration of this network - that is, the presence of additional nodes - is dependent on the type of software you decide to use.
Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5 in fact it does not have a profirst software /app mobile for the management of controller and / or slave nodes of the profirst network Z-Wave: it is in fact a standard component that can be controlled by several different software companies.
The implementation field of Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5 it is typically that of the HUB personal: it can be used without details proproblems like reality Home Assistant, openHAB, Domoticz, but also reality PRO, such as HomeSeer, Axial, indigo, Z-Way and much more.
The analysis in terms of compatibility it must be done in relation not so much to the direct compatibility that the component offers as it is the indirect one guaranteed for accessories that can be configured and controlled by defining the network Z-Wave means Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5.
As explained, Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5 does not have one proman app of control: i propri services, so to speak, are guaranteed by the software that, through the USB port of the computer on which they are running, manage to drive it.
It makes no sense therefore to talk about compatibility with smart speakers, of AppHomeKit or other services: these degrees of compatibility are all indirect (and are guaranteed based on the software in use) and accessories Z-Wave in use.
Compatibility it is certainly maximum compared to the standards Z-Wave respected by Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5: this is the most important certainty.
In terms of home automation integrability, Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5 does not present - obviously, given the concept on which it is based - proproblems of any kind.
Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5 si integrates without any proBlema with the best known of the personal HUBsoftware in a very trivial way. It is in fact sufficient to add two (literally) lines of code in the configuration to enable this component and activate the features Z-Wave dell 'HUB (such as the complete management of nodes and entities deriving from their integration).
Once integrated the dongle all 'HUB you can manage the network Z-Wave then add, configure and remove nodes in a rather simple way. We have dedicated to this a guide .
Talk about home automation integrability of an antenna Z-Wave with Homey It makes no sense: who owns Homey in fact it also has - natively - support for this standard.
openHAB and Domoticz
Also openHAB e Domoticz, as Home Assistant, natively support integration with this BRIDGE/Gateway; it is therefore possible to manage the profirst network Z-Wave with these HUB personal.
Homebridge, BRIDGE software to make compatible with AppHomeKit devices that are not natively compatible with this standard do not seem to have a plugin that can be managed directly Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5. In reality it is more than normal for a purely architectural matter that we will not dwell on (let's talk about it if anything FORUM); it is more natural to imagine the availability of a plugin that allows Homebridge to dialogue with others HUB able to manage the component. This is the case - and it's just an example - of the plugin "homebridge-zway“, Which allows you to connect Homebridge with a server instance Z-Way, a software component that allows you to manage a network in its entirety Z-Wave starting from antennas like (or analogous to) Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5.
- you install Z-Way;
- configures on it Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5;
- the network is configured on it Z-Wave and accessories are added Z-Wave;
- connects Homebridge to Z-Way through “homebridge-zway";
- at this point theapp "Home" will see all the accessories Z-Wave defined on Z-Way.
It works, but it makes more sense to manage the network directly Z-Wave from a HUB How Home Assistant o Homey and then through them "expose" the entities Z-Wave ad Appthe HomeKits.
