One of the sensors more apprezzati in domotica is certainly the one designed to intercept any - even the smallest - flooding. In this review we take the analysis of FIBARO, specifically in the version compatible with the standard Appthe HomeKits (like sapplet's take the line "Home”Of FIBARO presents some elements in the double version HomeKit / Z-Wave). Furthermore, the sensor also has a probe for detecting the temperature of the environment in which it is installed and is able to detect any movement from the point where it is installed.

The FIBARO flooding sensor appThey are like a small circular component of about six centimeters in diameter, in plastic, with a beautiful curvilinear design. On the back, or on the part that rests on the surface to be monitored, presents three small metal pins which are used, for theappfor detection: in the presence of water (even minimal) the contacts are in fact short-circuited, causing detection. Still on the bottom, the unit presents a hole from which the acoustic warning comes out activated in the event of an alarm due to flooding, a feature that distinguishes the sensor from many other models which are usually lacking; however, it should be pointed out that in the event of copious flooding the water would reach the hole (just a few millimeters from the ground) silencing the acoustic signal almost completely. It would have been perhaps a smarter choice to place this hole, rather than on the bottom, on the top of the unit.

The unit is basically composed from two parts: a top cover and the real unit e probelow. An antagonist rotation on the axis of the two elements causes detachment and opening, allowing us access to the internal unit, which is simple and well organized. The unit, powered from a long-lasting CR123A battery, it also features a multicolored LED for various signals (operating status, low battery, etc.).

As shown in the photo, the board also has several free access contacts, the use of which is not documented; in the future we will try to understand if it is possible, through them, to extend the use of the sensor also to other features.

The unit can be placed wherever it is the need to monitor any flooding: bathrooms, washing machine compartments, sinks: the unit is still built for indoor use, in fact it does not bear bad weather and extreme temperatures. The positionnamemust be horizontal and the surface ofappit must not be electrically conductive (for example, no metal surfaces). His weight it is specifically calibrated so that in the event of copious flooding the unit floats, therefore not remaining submerged. A beautiful thought.

As anticipated in the beginning, the sensor is also equipped with a detection probe of the temperature of the environment in which it is installed. Finally, it is also able to detect if and when it is moved / moved (this survey is interpreted by theapp "House of Appas "flooding"). This function (called "tamper") can be deactivated.

Installation

The installation it is simple and immediate as for every HomeKit compatible component. After inserting the battery it is in fact sufficient to carry out theapp "Home" (taking care to have the bluetooth active on the device / computer) and select "Add accessory", then follow the on-screen instructions:

At the end of the progives a new one tile will be available of the two sensors (flooding and temperature) for consultation as well as for management through automation (the latter only flood detection sensor).

Experience of use

Let's not talk about rocket science: the sensor is simple is simply does his. We really like the presence of visual (LED) and acoustic signals: unlike many other sensors, FIBARO also has these features. The sensibility It is very good: we have prodesigned to trigger it with very small amounts of water and the sensor has detected the flooding on time. The precision of the temperature sensor is at the tenth of a degree.

Customization is guaranteed through theapp FIBAROHome (obviously only for Appthe iOS), which allows the fine tuning of the various services guaranteed by the component.

Obviously once registered at "Casa" the component is manageable (even as trigger for automations) also through theapp Elgato “Eve"

Remote control - not being a component Wi-Fi able to dialogue with a hypothetical cloud of the productor - is not natively guaranteed, except from theapp "Home" itself. In this case, remember the need imposed by HomeKit the constant presence of an iOS component at home (iPad, HomePod or Apple TV) connected to Wi-Fi and certainly with active Bluetooth. We tested this configuration and it works perfectly.

Compatibility

Said soon: the degree of compatibility recognized by produttore is almost zero.
The sensor is not in fact supported nor by Amazon Echo (Alexa) da Google Home (Assistant) nor even less with IFTTT.

FIBARO Flood Sensor (HomeKit version) is compatible only with Appthe HomeKits - with everything that goes with it, including the possibility to interrogate it through Siri ("... what is the temperature in the room?"). Obviously it is also compatible with the proman app previously mentioned mobile, FIBAROHome for iOS.

Domotics integrability

The degree of integrationunfortunately, it is the other sore point of this very valid sensor.

Besides the possibility of integrating it with theapp Elve "Eve" - which allows to expand the functionality of the HomeKit ecosystem, FIBARO Flood Sensor (version Apple HomeKit) cannot be integrated with anything else.

We made an attempt to check if at least the component "Appthe HomeKit controller support"Of Home Assistant was fortunately able to register and then integrate the component, but unfortunately the result was negative: this component queries the LAN and not Bluetooth to work, so the result was practically taken for granted.

FIBARO Flood Sensor HomeKit - BoAIl Flood Sensor of FIBARO (HomeKit version) is one of the best flooding sensors we have been able to test or read: not only is it well built, but it also has functions and features that are not found in many other rivals; we are convinced that a test performed on the same component but in version Z-Wave would have taken us to progive a very high rating, which unfortunately in this HomeKit version does not happen.

As can be seen from the analysis above, the multi-sensor totals very high values ​​on important aspects as quality and functionality. Unfortunately the evaluation decreases when we talk about user experience (for reasons related to the specifics of Appthe HomeKits illustrated above), but it is the degree of compatibility and integrability domotics to undermine the evaluation: the component works alone with AppHomeKit, and that's it. Little, unless you are making the profirst personal home automation based on it in whole on the standard of Apple - without thinking that in a future this approstaff can change.

With this in mind - but alone in this light - the perplexities dissolve and, for inDomus, this component comes promoved with flying colors. Certainly it is not a cheap component: its price is quite high, especially when compared to similar components such as for example the Xiaomi, which costs a quarter and makes up for the same function (which, however, is not equipped with a sensor or temperature or tamper and needs a BRIDGE/Gateway and a HUB to be used). In essence, the price can be justified as the sensor can be purchased and used immediately, without the need for other components.
