Aqara Cube - in your hand

In geometry the regular cube or hexahedron is one of the 5 platonic solids, which features 6 square faces, 8 vertices and 12 edges; more commonly instead a cube is ... a cube, or one of the most elementary geometric forms, of those with which we learn to become familiar, as human beings, as children.

That product for the lines Mi Smart Home (Mijia) di Xiaomi e Aqara Smart Home Automation di LUMI (also known as Magic Cube) is an object conceived - we say it immediately - to confer to the proman an authentic touch of magic. Simply moving this object (we'll see how) it is possible, in fact, to execute more or less complex commands according to profirst fantasy.

Xiaomi /LUMI Cube it is a hard plastic cube of four centimeters of side, white, sufficiently compact and heavy the right one (around 70 grams). One of the six faces hides battery and button pairing: this cube, in fact, it's a sensor ZigBee. The battery is one CR2032 (Included).

This sensor "can do" six different things through his ability to recognize six (or rather seven) movements (gestures) from him ... suffered. In practice it is able to recognize (through three accelerometers inside it) the movements that are imposed by our hands, like the visual list that follows:

Aqara Mi Cube
shake / rotate 90-180 / rotation axis / vertical / lateral shift

To each of the detected movements from the cube it is possible to assign, in home automation, a specific action, any action obviously provided by proits operational ambit.

imagine of wanting to switch on / off a specific light in the house through the cube: I choose the gesture (let's say the rotation on the cube axis, the fourth from the left in the diagram above), I match it to the action "toggle"Associated with light and you're done. Imagine instead of triggering a scene (eg turning off the lights in the room, turning on the TV and choosing a channel): same thing, just choose the gesture, associate the action and nothing more.Aqara Cube

We referred to a seventh, additional gesture: the unit, in fact, is able to detect the "free fall" Throwing the cube to the ground it is therefore possible to activate the latter - unofficial - gesture. However we do not recommend the use of this gesture, as it could be exploited very few times, before breaking the cube - of course, unless you associate the "free fall"To some home automation function of self-destruction of theappartamento. At that point the gesture would be certainly very choreographic (attention, however, to the presence of small children or pets). 🙂
(It's a joke. But the "free fall" gesture really exists)

Like all components ZigBee, this sensor also needs to be configured and used BRIDGE/Gateway; basic, have thisnameis done via the proman app Aqara Home (For Android e iOS) in case the component is connected to gateway of the line Aqara Smart Home Automation or through theapp We Home (For Android e iOS) where it is connected to gateway of the line Xiaomi Mi Smart Home, to which is comproproperly compatible. Obviously, in the absence of such gateway the solution (among the most jokes) may be to adopt a BRIDGE/Gateway compatible with a personal HUBsoftware, or directly a personal hardware HUB.

Obviously, all the scenes, actions and anything else associated with the cube gestures are relative to the operating environment to which I will associate the cube: the app Aqara Home e We Home already in themselves they allow the configuration of the gestures, but they do the same personal HUBlike Home Assistant, openHAB, Homey etc.

Finally, in the same operational area multiple cubes can coexist at the same time, thus multiplying the controllable functions.

Xiaomi Aqara Cube - Desk

Talk about the grade compatibility of a single component ZigBee it makes little sense. In fact, these components cannot be used alone but only coupled with an element BRIDGE/Gateway Zigbee↔︎TCP/IP, therefore its compatibility derives directly from the degree of compatibility of this "collector" element to which it is associated.

We have a way to test cars with success this associated sensor:

Use of the sensor associated with gateway Mijia and Aqara provides partial compatibility with Google Assistant e Amazon Alexa, while the service is not supported IFTTT. As we will see below, these limits can be circumvented in some cases by the degree of integrability of these gateway. Furthermore, while the gateway Aqara it is natively compatible with Appthe HomeKits, gateway Xiaomi is not.

Owners of Homey can directly use the sensor without needing gateway (it is Homey itself), therefore since Homey is compatible with Google Assistant e Amazon Alexa (as well as IFTTT), so does the sensor itself.

Domotics integrability

The degree of home automation integrability, as for compatibility, it goes through the gateway to which the sensor is connected.

Il gateway Xiaomi it can be integrated with practically all realities HUB best known software:

  • Home Assistant;
  • Homebridge (to render the gateway and therefore the accessories connected to it compatible Appthe HomeKits);
  • Domoticz;
  • openHAB.

As compatible natively with Appthe HomeKits, il gateway Aqara instead it cannot be integrated with HUB personal software. In practice using a gateway Aqara it is not possible to integrate the accessories connected to it profirst personal home automation.

If instead to integrate the sensor to the proprio personale HUB do not want to use a gateway Xiaomi / Aqara can be used alternatively elements like the BRIDGE/Gateway software deCONZ combined with antennas ConBee and / or RaspBee (the first with any computer the second specifically with Raspberry Pi) or zigbee2mqtt combined with the antenna CC2531. Integrated through deCONZ, we have appurato that the "Cube" provides additional "hidden" features (up to 36 additional scenes).

Homeyas mentioned, it has an antenna itself ZigBee, therefore it is able to independently integrate the sensor without the need for other components. We have also dedicated to this specific integration a guide .

Home Assistant✔️Through integration of BRIDGE/Gateway to which it is connected (where possible) or via antennas ZigBee connected to the computer on which theHUB software (eg. deCONZ+ ConBee / RaspBee)
Homebridge (Appthe HomeKits)
Homey✔️Means app Homey "Xiaomi / Aqara ZigBee"

Detailed evaluation:

Constructive quality
Use: quality and experience
Xiaomi LUMI Cube - BoAThe "Cube" of Xiaomi e LUMI it is essential for the proown personal home automation? Absolutely not.

Is it an irresistible object? Hell, yes! The idea of controlling the lights by shaking an object in the air, turning on the TV by turning it on the table, activating the "good night" scenario by turning it to the side: it is only a partial and imaginative list of what can be done with this small and cheap object. The limit, as always, is fantasy.

Surely it is a gadget with a noticeable wow effect: it does a lot Jedi, the fact of commanding the profirst home automation (or other functions) through the movement of a simple geometric object like a cube. More than really useful, the Cube is a small object fun and tasty, certainly not a must for the profirst home automation but rather something fancy when they love each other minimalist, functional and ... futuristic design elements.
