Home Assistant su Raspberry Pi: various installations, things to do

3 minutes of reading

Raspberry logoAs explained also in the card dedicated to "first steps", Home Assistant it's a HUB extremely versatile free staff dedicated to personal home automation and installable in many different operating areas.

When you decide to make it work on a Raspberry Pi (wisely, for a whole series of reasons sacrosanct) then the choices regarding how to implement it are essentially three:

  • HASSIO
  • HASSIO on Docker
  • Raspbian + Home Assistant

The first possibility, HASSIO, is that dedicated to the mass. This is a distribution of Home Assistant which allows you to install it with one simple gesture, and makes Rasberry Pi completely enslaved to it. In practice Raspberry becomes Home Assistant. You don't have to think about much, just configure Home Assistant for the profirst home automation. HASSIO it is a very convenient distribution for the little practical of technology, above all because - besides being turnkey - it offers an internal store (free, rest assured) that allows you to install additional components with a simple click.

The second, HASSIO on Docker, is perhaps the best: it plans to install the traditional Raspberry operating system (Raspbian) and, through a trick offered by virtualization technologies, to install on it HASSIO with all its advantages.

The third, Raspbian +Home Assistant, is the one dedicated to people with a slightly higher degree of preparation. It is not necessary to be an atomic scientist, but certainly a basic preparation helps a lot. This approprovides the installation of the traditional Raspberry operating system (Raspbian), its configuration, then the manual installation of Home Assistant.
The advantage of this type of installation is that Home Assistant runs as a "single proaccess, leaving the administrator the possibility of supporting him later with other software. This type of installation does not make available user the additional functionality of internal store provided by HASSIO. Any additional components will also have to be installed manually. Once there was also the distribution "HASSBIAN”, Which was basically a Raspbian installation with down Home Assistant installed, but was abandoned during 2019.

Let us now what is the checklist of things to do in case you want to implement Home Assistant, which is the chosen path:

HASSIO
